The TRAIL Check
After reading “Embracing Life’s True Hike in the Woods,” this course is where you walk your own trail, define happiness, and choose your next real step.
By the end, you will have a personal Trail Map, a clearer definition of happiness, and one realistic next step you can take.
Draw a happy face in the top-right corner of every page you write or journal on. When your eyes return to it, let it remind you of the direction: toward a life you can truly call happy.
Welcome to the Trail

I tell people life is like a hike in the woods. We begin at a trailhead we didn't choose, we come to junctions we can't see beyond, and we make the best decisions we can with the map we have at the time. This course is where we slow down long enough to look at that map together.
This isn't about putting your younger self on trial. It isn't about pretending every difficult mile was a mistake, either. Some parts of life are hard because they matter. Some are detours we never asked for. Some turns were made for us before we were old enough or free enough to choose. The work is learning to tell those things apart.
You'll move through five parts of the TRAIL Check: Tune in to the signal, Review the trail behind you, Ask what shaped the turn, Identify what matters now, and Locate the next real step. Then we'll borrow the view from the end of life and ask the simplest question underneath all the others: when you look at the life as a whole, are you happy?
I don't mean happy every minute. I mean loved and loving, at peace with who you are, and able to say the life you're walking feels like your own. That's the direction this course keeps returning to.
Use the online exercises or print the journal. Take your time. Your answers aren't graded, and there's no perfect map to produce. Be straight with yourself about what's true, kind enough not to bury yourself in shame, and practical enough to leave each lesson with something you can actually use.
One last thing: at the top-right of every journal page, you'll see a happy face. I've told people for years to draw one there. It's a small reminder that through all the reviewing, learning, and hard miles, the reason we're doing this is to move toward a life we can truly call happy. Let's begin.
