The Awakening

The page that cost me the most had no sentences on it.

The word awakening makes it sound like lightning. One big night, one big flash, a man walking out of his old life into a new one. And I understand why people assume the bathroom floor was that moment. It wasn't. The floor is where my old life stopped. The awakening came after, slowly, and it never once looked dramatic. It looked like a series of doors, every one of them so small and so ordinary that I nearly walked past them all.

The first door was a stack of cheap yellow notebooks from the grocery store. I want to be clear about what they were and weren't. I was not starting a book. I was a fifty-year-old man with half a century of things inside him that had never been said out loud to one single living person, and I'd run out of room to hold them. So I started getting up before the sun and writing them down at the kitchen table. Nobody knew. That was the point. The notebook was the first place in my life where the whole truth got to exist somewhere outside my own head, and for a long time, an audience of zero was the only audience I could survive.

The second door was harder, and it took me more than a year to walk through it: I asked for help. I won't tell you how that happened or what it looked like, because those scenes are in the book and I fought hard to get them right. What I'll tell you is why it was hard, because this is the part I most want other men to hear. I didn't stay out of that room because I was lazy or didn't believe in it. I stayed out because of the deepest rule I had: nobody gets all of you. I grew up learning that information about me, in the wrong hands, was a weapon, and I'd organized my whole adult life around making sure no one person ever held enough of me to hurt me with it. Therapy asks you to walk in and hand a stranger everything. For a man wired like me, that wasn't an appointment. It was a surrender. It turned out to be the best one I ever made.
